A New Use for Food Waste at the Pani Gold Mine
Starting in late November 2025, food waste at the Pani Gold Mine will no longer be treated as ordinary organic waste. About 50 kilograms of the 300 kilograms of daily leftover food from employees are now being used as feed for a duck farm jointly managed with Kodim 1313/Pohuwato.
“Turning food waste into animal feed not only helps reduce organic waste but also creates new economic opportunities through the duck farm we run together with the Kodim,” said Mahesha Lugiana, CSR Manager at the Pani Gold Mine on November 24, 2025.
Located in Pohuwato, Gorontalo, the Pani Gold Mine fully supports the farm’s development—building the coop complete with a small pond to maintain the ducks’ health and providing 207 ducklings to be raised for meat, eggs, and breeding. Kodim plans to add another 200 ducks soon to expand the farm.
“This will continue until the program develops into a prototype that can be shared as a learning model for the people of Pohuwato,” said the Commander of Kodim 1313/Pohuwato, Lt. Col. Inf. Madiyan Surya S.Hub.Int, M.Han. Going forward, ducklings from the farm will be distributed to residents under the guidance of Babinsa (village supervisory NCOs) so the benefits reach more households.
“We want to ensure that every environmental initiative we carry out provides social benefits to the community,” Mahesha added. The collaboration is expected to support local food security efforts while providing additional economic opportunities for communities around the mine.
